Symptom network topological features predict the effectiveness of herbal treatment for pediatric cough

摘要： Pediatric cough is a heterogeneous condition in terms of symptoms and the underlying disease mechanisms. Symptom phenotypes hold complicated interactions between each other to form an intricate network structure. This study aims to investigate whether the network structure of pediatric cough symptoms is associated with the prognosis and outcome of patients. A total of 384 cases were derived from the electronic medical records of a highly experienced traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) physician. The data were divided into two groups according to the therapeutic effect, namely, an invalid group (group A with 40 cases of poor efficacy) and a valid group (group B with 344 cases of good efficacy). Several well-established analysis methods, namely, statistical test, correlation analysis, and complex network analysis, were used to analyze the data. This study reports that symptom networks of patients with pediatric cough are related to the effectiveness of treatment: a dense network of symptoms is associated with great difficulty in treatment. Interventions with the most different symptoms in the symptom network may have improved therapeutic effects.

Laparoscopic treatment of liver diseases in children

摘要： Laparoscopic liver surgery has been increasingly used for the treatment of pediatric liver diseases over the past decade due to the development of special laparoscopic instruments and improvements in the technique. A number of factors are considered when electing to undergo the surgical process, including age, type of liver disease, and so on. Especially in children with liver masses, the number of trocars used and the position of their placement must be carefully designed to achieve successful outcomes. In the current review, the application of various laparoscopic instruments and the methods used for the laparoscopic treatment of liver diseases in children over the past decade are summarized.

Vein of Galen malformations - report of 2 cases and literature review

摘要： Vein of Galen malformations (VGMs) are rare, consisting approximately 1% of intracranial vascular malformations, but nearly one third of pediatric vascular malformations, which can cause severe morbidity and mortality in infants and older children, but more particularly in neonates. We presented 2 patients with VGMs which were confirmed by characteristic clinical symptoms and neuroradiological findings (including CT, MRI and/or angiography). One patient underwent embolization followed by CT, MRI and conventional angiography. The patient’s neurological and cognitive status was normal at present. The other neonate died of congestive heart failure 36 h after birth.
